Programs: AVID

AVID

AVID, Advancement Via Individual Determination,  is a college readiness system designed to increase schoolwide learning and performance. Schools earn the Highly Certified distinction by implementing with fidelity and documented success four domains (leadership, instruction, systems, and culture), and by promoting college readiness for all students. Every FMMA student benefits from our school-wide AVID strategies, but those in the AVID elective class take college readiness to the next level.

Students who apply to the AVID program may earn a spot in the AVID elective course. There, for one class period a day, they learn organizational and study skills, work on critical thinking and asking probing questions, get academic help from peers and college tutors, and participate in enrichment and motivational activities that make college seem attainable. As students progress in AVID, their self-images improve and they become academically successful leaders and role models for other students. AVID serves helps students set goals and gain skills to help make the dream of college a reality.

The AVID curriculum is based on rigorous standards, developed by middle and senior high school teachers in collaboration with college professors. It is driven by the WICOR method, which stands for writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading. AVID curriculum is used in AVID elective classes and across all content-area classes (English language arts, math, science, and social studies).
