The School District of Lee County uses a detailed method for examining student achievement in the District's schools. This allows district and school staff to see the strengths and opportunities for improvement in academic programs for a variety of student populations within each school.

Achievement

The District Score Card shows the percent of students that scored Level 3 or higher on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) broken down by and subject. The State designates Level 3 as "satisfactory."

Unlike the State grading system, the District Score Card takes into account the beginning achievement level of students in each school. By looking at the students' beginning achievement level, a target or "Expected" achievement can be determined. That can be compared to the "Actual" achievement which indicates how a school performed in terms of moving students up to satisfactory.

Actual Achievement: This is the percentage of students who scored a Level 3 or higher on the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). There are five achievement levels, 1 being the lowest and 5 being the highest. The State of Florida has determined that Level 3 is "satisfactory."

Expected Achievement: This is the percentage of students who should have scored at Achievement Level 3 or higher based on the District average performance at each achievement level.

Gains

The District Score Card also compares a school's FSA gains in Reading and Math with the average gains in the district as a whole. Gains are the increases in scores of students within each of the five achievement levels. For example, if a student scores 300 in grade 3 and 320 in grade 4, their gain would be 20 points. The gains are averaged within each achievement level group.

Color Coding:

  • Green indicates that this school's results were 3 points or higher than expected (for Achievement) and district average (for Gains).
  • Red indicates this school's results were 3 points lower than expected/district average.
  • No color coding indicates that this school's results were within 2 points above or below the expected/district average.

Each year the State of Florida issues school grades to all public schools that qualify.* School grades are based primarily on the results of state-wide student achievement assessments called the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA) which includes End-of- Course Exams (EOCs).

The following components are included in the grade calculation:

  • Achievement (percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher) in reading, math, science. Social studies achievement is also included for middle and high schools.
  • Learning gains in reading and math. Learning gains are generally measured by the movement of students from one achievement level (or sublevel) to another.
  • Percentage of students in accelerated courses like Algebra 1 and industry certification for middle schools and Advanced Placement, dual enrollment, IB, AICE, or Industry Certification for high schools.
  • Graduation Rate (high schools only)

* Some kinds of schools and special programs are excluded from the grading system (e.g. Dept. of Juvenile Justice centers, special education centers, etc.).
